I have 3 motion activated night lights in my house; two of them running on AA-batteries, another one a 'plug-in' plugged into an electrical outlet. One of the battery ones is in the bathroom, another one at the top of the stairs, and the plug-in one in the upstairs hallway. I have had each one of them turn on suddenly even though no one was there. Each instance involved a single light that went on, a few weeks apart from the other instances.

The first time was about 2 months ago, I was sitting on the toilet, not moving at all, then suddenly the night light for the bathroom went 'ON'. Then, after a few minutes it automatically went off. Its set to go off when someone enters the bathroom. Only when I was leaving the bathroom did it turn on as I passed in front of it.

Then about 3 weeks ago I was laying in bed, I had just gone to bed for the night when suddenly the motion activated plug-in night light in the hallway turned on.

Then, last night I was brushing my teeth at the bottom of the stairs, when the motion activated night-light went on at the top of the stairs. I have to get at least half-way up the stairs before that light senses my presence so there is no way it could sense me at the bottom of the stairs, it only turns on when someone is already at the top of the stairs.

Do motion activated night lights sometimes malfunction like this and turn on for absolutely NO reason, or is my house haunted? I would check each one individually for any sort of malfunction as there could be something explainable that has just been over looked.

The battery operated ones could be experiencing low battery power causing it to not function properly. Kind of like when smoke detectors beep when the batteries are low. The one that plugs in the wall is more curious. Motion detectors work when there is motion within the parameters of its designed area it was intended to cover. Pets, individuals and possibly wind can activate the sensors causing them to light up. They work a bit differently than laser circuit detectors where if the circuit is broken it causes a light to come on or a sound to go off.

Motion sensors send out a signal and it bounces off an area and when there is something that moves within that area its light goes off. I would take a good look at them and see if you cannot resolve this in a reasonable manor. Chances are if you did have some type of paranormal activity you would encounter other things such as possible voices, various sounds and possibly even see something. Take care. When you notice something out of the corner of your eye and you turn to look at it and there is nothing there.

Those things are the invisible inhabitants of earth. We can't see them, not very well that is, but motion sensors can detect them. Well it's ovbiousally ghosts lol jk idk what could cause it but I had a fire alarm that was like that.

It would just randomally go off and it wasent the batteries cause it was connected into the house's electrical system. Answer Save. Tim M Lv 7. Motion Detector Night Light. Hindusufi Lv 7. How do you think about the answers?

So I bought a new one, I am using regular bulbs, but it's still doing it. I've tried every combination of setting, confirmed nothing is in in the way of the sensor, etc. Any ideas? The only thing that comes to my mind is that the bulbs are too close to the sensor.

It may be detecting that the bulbs are "light enough outside" so it thinks it is daytime and shuts off. Then it sees it is dark and comes back on. Most of them require flood bulbs.

motion light cycling on and off.....why?

They have a mirrored backing that keeps the light from shining back into the sensor. Good luck If you have the directions it should show you a way to redo it so it will just be a light and no motion sensor. Not all systems have this option though. I can tell you those things are not all made equal. I've had to replace some at my parent house several times within a year. My dad finally put up the dough and bought some expensive ones, been up 3 years now with no problems, aside from normal bulb changes.

They're not at all difficult to replace, but if you don't feel comfortable call a friend or worst case, call an electrician. Should be a snap to get it done for them. If still having the same problem try pointing the detector to a different area, to eliminate something in the enviroment tripping it. Last of all you may still be in the test mode. Answer Save. Motion Detector Keeps Going Off: a Troubleshooting Guide

It was glaring off the door when it swung.Security lights can be an excellent way of protecting your home from potential intruders. You need to be able to troubleshoot problems with security lights, especially as some of them can be fixed without calling in an electrician. When you turn on the power to your security lights system, the motion sensors are activated and once they warm up, they can detect heat and movements in the surrounding area creating a "protective grid".

A movement sensor is tripped when too many grid zones are blocked by moving objects consequently changing the infrared energy levels. Therefore, motion sensor security lights are meant to come on only when they detect motion, but sometimes for various reasons, they can remain on all the time. This could be attributed to an electrical failure, lightning, power surges, or even user error.

The best course of action is to see first if something has changed in the immediate environment. For instance, a tree close by that didn't affect the security light last year would have grown since and extended its branches now causing the wind to rustle through the leaves, constantly moving them in front of the sensor and tripping it. So check for anything that could be constantly moving in the area of detection. If nothing obvious turns up, try turning the lights off at the breaker or unplugging for around 20 seconds.

Confirm visually that the security lights have gone off and then turn the breaker back on. The light will reappear but should go off after a few minutes. If the light from your security lights is flickering, the course of action depends on whether the problem lies with single or multiple lights. If a single bulb is flickering, you will need to climb up and check that the bulb is securely fitted in the fixture. If it is secured tightly in place, try replacing the bulb because flickering lights can be a prelude to the bulb burning out completely.

In most instances, this will eliminate the problem. If it doesn't, turn the breaker off for that circuit and inspect every electrical box along the line for damaged wires or loose connections and fix it.

If your inspection doesn't lead to anything conclusive, however, you may need to have the wiring inspected by a qualified electrician.

If your motion sensor security lights keep coming on for every passing thing, you need to adjust the sensitivity or slightly change the direction of the sensor or even a combination of both to eliminate the problem. You can check this by simply replacing the light, or maybe you want to make certain before buying some expensive halogen or LED replacement light, test the fixture socket with a multimeter.

If all is fine, replace the bulb. To test further, switch off the circuit breaker for the security lights. Open up the electrical box and check each of the connectors to make sure all the wires to each connector doesn't come loose. If that should happen, remove the connector and verify to make sure it is the right size for the wires. You can then put all its wires back together and re-secure the connector back on.

You can give the individual wires a little "tug" to verify its connection. After checking the connections, if the problem still exists, it could be caused by a faulty breaker or some deeper problem, where a qualified electrician should be called in. It only takes a minute to sign up. I've been looking at some of the other questions about sensors, but I can't find a solution to my problem. I have a movement sensor PIR i presume that turns on a light when movement is detected. Annoyingly it turns on without reason; even when noone is in the house. There is absolutely no movement near. Power bumps can cause them to turn on also spiders.

Why Do My Motion Sensor Lights Keep Flashing On and Off?

There are models that have better circuitry not to trigger for small power bumps and some have sensitivity adjustments these are the 2 nuisance issues I have found. These units also detect heat changes. Make sure the HVAC vent isn't blowing warm or cool air onto the detector or into its view of the space.

If your motion detector keeps going off, you may be tempted to just leave off your motion detector entirely. Before we go farther, though it may simply be a nuisance to you, there are some reasons you want to resolve your motion detection issues as early as possible. That could be exceptionally dangerous, as well as expensive!

There are many types of motion detection technology, ranging from detectors that use microwave rays to detectors that use heat signatures. Here are a few of the most common problems :. Placing your alarms correctly can minimize the number of false alarms you get. In general, you want to place your alarms in areas that have few objects but in which an individual would have to pass through.

An example is a hallway or an entryway.

One of the biggest problems with installing a motion detector alarm is that they tend to set off false alarms. Contrary to popular belief, false alarms are not caused by cheaper alarms, but instead by bad placement of the alarms. You also want to minimize motion throughout your home and calibrate your devices effectively for pets.

Cellular Security Cameras From Verizon.Motion detector lights feature a motion sensor that's sensitive to electrical surges or power blinks.

Occasionally, after a power blink, the motion sensor light will remain in the on or off position. While it's logical to think that the light fixture is broken, sometimes all that's required to get it working properly again is for the motion sensor to be reset. Resetting the motion sensor only takes a few minutes, requires no tools, and anybody can do it. Turn off the circuit breaker that powers the motion sensor light for a minimum of 30 seconds, then turn it back on.

This will often automatically reset the sensor for many models of motion detector light. Some models require the breaker to be off for as long as an hour to reset the motion detector. Turn the light switch on, turn it off for two seconds and turn it back on again. If the motion detector light is fed by a wall switch, this often will reset the detector. Turn the light switch on and off rapidly approximately four times. The light will eventually stay on continuously.

Once the light is on, turn the switch off, wait five seconds and turn it back on again. The light should stay off and the sensor should be reset. Hunker may earn compensation through affiliate links in this story. Step 1. Step 2.
